Editing links and references sitewide

A site can contain many links to a page file or references to a media file, URL, or e-mail address. If you need to change the target of these links or references, you can change them all at once, without opening the pages they appear on. This is particularly useful when you need to change a repeated design element, background image, or URL external to the site.

Important: Sitewide link editing can't be undone, so use the feature carefully. For example, don't replace a referenced image without making sure that the new image has exactly the same size and width-to-height proportions as the one you want to replace.

To change all the links to an item (a file, URL, or e-mail address) at once:

1 Display the tab listing the item to replace--Files, External, or Extras.

2 Select the item.

3 Do one of the following:

  • Click the Open In & Out Links Palette button () on the toolbar, or choose Window > In & Out Links.
  • Click the Change References button () on the toolbar, or choose Site > Change References. (Use this option if the replacement item is not visible on the tab.)

  • 4 Do one of the following:

  • If the replacement item is visible in the tab, drag from the point-and-shoot button () for the item in the In & Out Links palette or Change References dialog box to the replacement item.

  • Newlogo.gif replaces oldlogo.gif.

  • If the replacement item is not visible on the tab, enter it in the Change References list box. You can browse to the item if it is not an external URL.

  • This displays a dialog box with a list of the pages needing updating.

5 Click OK to confirm the updates, first deselecting any pages you don't want to update.
